The Alair System uses mild heat to reduce the amount of excess airway smooth muscle tissue in the airways. Less muscle tissue means less airway constriction during an asthma attack, allowing patients to breathe more easily.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CONTRAINDICATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Patients with the following conditions should not be treated with Bronchial Thermoplasty (BT):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Presence of a pacemaker, internal defibrillator, or other implantable electronic devices<\/li>\n<li>Known sensitivity to medications required to perform bronchoscopy, including lidocaine, atropine, and benzodiazepines<\/li>\n<li>Patients previously treated with the Alair System should not be retreated in the same area(s).
